The Reserves hung on in a nail-biting victory against St Bernards on Saturday at Elsternwick, winning by two points to book themselves into the Premier B Reserve Grand Final.
Much like the semi-final against Beaumaris last week, the first half was a low-scoring arm-wrestle as both teams tried to gain the ascendancy. The Blacks stayed in touch throughout but trailed by nine points at the half-time break.
The third term broke the game wide open, as the Blacks game charging out after the break. Six goals to two for the quarter was the result, with a nine-point deficit turned into a 17-point lead at the final change.
But for all their efforts in the third term, the Reserves couldn’t quite put the game to bed in the final term, going goalless to offer St Bernards hope of stealing victory.
Despite three goals for the Snowdogs in the fourth term, the Blacks clung on and sealed the win, ensuring they give themselves another crack at Beaumaris next Saturday.
Scott Myers and Pete Aitken finished with a couple of goals each, while Jordan Tunbridge, Steven Flight and Lewis Steere were among the best players in a stirring victory.
The two best teams in the 2018 Premier B Reserve competition will face off on Saturday at Elsternwick Park at 11.40am. We’d love to see as many Blackers down there as possible to help cheer the boys on as they chase the Club’s first premiership since 2014.
