The University Blacks are excited to officially unveil our new Indigenous jumper design for the 2023 Indigenous Round, which will be held on Sunday July 2nd vs the St. Kevin's Old Boys - 2pm at the University Main Oval.
We have been fortunate enough to work with Alkina Wilkinson (@alkinacreations), a proud Yorta Yorta woman on our new jumper design. Alkina has an amazing and extensive collection of artwork and has been a pleasure to work with every step of the way. Thank you to Alkina for working with us and providing the University Blacks a jumper we can all be proud of as we continue the journey towards Reconciliation.
Both our Senior's and Reserve's will be donning these jumpers during their games, whilst players have been given the opportunity to purchase their own to keep for themselves.
Regarding the design, the gathering circles represent the indigenous people of the land showing their physical and spiritual connection. The gathering circles also represent the Club and indigenous people sitting together, yarning, learning and sharing culture; signifying reconciliation.
The background represents the water ways of the Wurundjeri people. The Yarra River is also known as the Birrarung.
Bunjil the Wedge-Tail Eagle is the totem of the Wurundjeri people and is the Creator spirit. Gum leaves present the Manna Gum overlooking the University Main Oval and gum trees significance to the indigenous people of the land, and how they use gum leaves within their cultural practices. Boomerangs represent the resilience of the Wurundjeri people. The pattern inside the blue chevron represents oven mounds, ochre and more water ways.
The Blacks recognise the importance of continuing our education and journey in this space, and are proud to once more be hosting an Indigenous Round match back at the University Main Oval in just under 2 weeks time.
A big thank you must go to former Blacks' Secretary, MUFC Life-member, Scott Myers, for taking on the responsibility for organising our Indigenous Round this year. We are lucky to have Scott remain involved with the Club in this capacity, as his passion for and drive to make the Indigenous Round the best it can be is truly valued.
